Topic: THE COMPANY OF HOLY ADDICTS (4)
Text: 1 Corinthians 16:15Mark 4:3–816–17
Ministering: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)

We continue in our series. I have been explaining to you that an addiction is something that you are unable to stop, something you have a strong desire to always be doing, a habit you are unable to give up, or something you are strongly inclined to do. These days, these are the kinds of believers God is looking for: those who are addicted to God and addicted to Jehovah. We have also been looking at what we should be addicted to.

And the first one we discussed was being addicted to the presence of God. And I explained to you that the presence of God is the most valuable thing you can have on earth. That is why the psalmist prayed and said “Take not thy presence away from me”. Once the presence of God has been taken from a situation or person, it becomes an arena for witches, wizards, and all kinds of evil forces to be playing around. But in the presence of God is fullness of joy. Darkness flees from His presence. We need to be addicted to His presence.

The second thing we said we needed to be addicted to was the Word of God. And last week, we began to look at the categories of people who hear the Word of God. We also read from Mark 4, which talks about the parable of the sower. We are going to continue where we stopped last week. We talked about the four categories:
– the wayside heart.
– the stony heart.
– the thorny heart.
– the good ground.

Last week, we discussed the first kind of heart, which is the wayside heart. Today we will look at the stony-ground heart. Let us look at what the Bible says:
Mark 4:5–6 (KJV): “And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.”

The stony heart has no root; it just hears the Word of God. It is not taking root in them. Jesus began to explain the meaning of the seeds sown on stony hearts:
Mark 4:16–17 (KJV): “And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.”

Listen to me well: The first characteristic of this kind of heart is that it is on stony ground. It is hard, rigid, and tough. There are many hearts like that. This kind of heart struggles to maintain its own shape, frame, and structure. It is precast and inadaptable. You want to grow seeds on concrete? You are going to have very little success. That kind of heart is not permeable. It does not absorb from the outside. It argues that it should have its own way rather than submit to simple divine instructions.

It is always self-defensive. Even if you succeed in planting anything on it, it only grows for a little while. Any kind of instruction you give is met with rebuttal. There is nothing deep in them. It is people like that who will say, “Let me just keep quiet. I will not say anything again. But what is in my mind is what I am going to do. If I argue with them, they will call me the devil or the black sheep. So let them just say their own”. That is why some people attend MFM for 5, 10, or 15 years and are still the same. No revival. No change. No fire. No spiritual elevation. There is no divine acceleration because they come with a stony heart.

Just like that medical doctor who was married with five children, a deacon in church. One day, he was in the sitting room watching television when, all of a sudden, he began to shout “My chest!”. He then fell down and died. The wife, a medical doctor as well, did all she could, but the man did not come back to life. She then sat down, laid hands on the head and chest, and started praying. People came after 3 hours of her prayer and said, “Madam, let us take this man to the mortuary; he is gone.” But she said, “Nooo. That is not my covenant with God. How do I look after five children alone?” She kept on praying. The more she prayed, the colder the body got.

After 9 hours, people tried to persuade her again. They were whispering among themselves to drag her away from there and just carry the body away. She heard them and asked them for five more minutes. When they obliged her, she got in, locked the door behind them, and continued the prayer. After 12 hours, the husband opened his eyes and began to tell the story. He said that immediately after he fell down, he saw himself coming out of that body on the floor and started going on a wide pathway. He said he saw so many people on the pathway—in the thousands.

He said that at the end of that pathway, he could see a burning hellfire, and he said he could already feel the heat from a distance. Then he started crying that he was a child of God and could not end up in hellfire. People were being pushed into hell. He said the strange thing he saw was that some people were marching into hell, and it was as though they were drugged. They were going into hell like zombies. When it came to his turn to be pushed in, he said there was suddenly a voice from hell that shouted “hold on!” and the demons dragging him stopped.

Then Lucifer came out from among them. He said the pictures we see of Lucifer are fake, with horns and an ugly face, and that Lucifer is a very beautiful-looking creature. He said Lucifer told God, “O God, this man cannot go to heaven. He is not qualified. He commits adultery in his heart. He is also a sermon-proof Christian. He does not take your word seriously. Therefore, he is not qualified to go to heaven; he is qualified for hellfire according to your Word”. I want you to know that the devil knows the Bible very well.

Then the man said, God answered Lucifer and said, “Yes. I agree with you. He is truly not qualified for heaven. But you cannot put him in hellfire now because of this woman”. At that point, he saw his wife praying. God then said “Because of this woman praying, I want to give him a second chance”. The doctor said that it was at that point that he opened his eyes. Then God told him “What you have seen now, go about and preach this to everyone”. So this doctor in the early 1980s went about preaching this everywhere. And I could remember clearly that anytime he was invited to preach, he would end his sermon by saying, “Beloveth, there is heaven! There is also hell!”

That man was going to land in hellfire because of his stony heart. A heart that is already made up. A heart that refuses to listen to instructions. Such people just want to come to church, pray, and go home. They must choose to sin, to drink, and to dress indecently. They say things like, “Just go to that place to pray. Do not follow all those other things they are saying, oh”. If you are like this, you are officially a stony heart. A person with that kind of heart is already formed. Such hearts are made up. It leaves little to no room for consideration or meditation.

This kind of heart is the direct opposite of meekness. People with hearts like this are so full of themselves. They boast and talk, “Do you not know who I am?” But the question is this: who are you anyway? If you die, six feet is where you end. Nobody will measure twelve feet for you. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:7 (KJV), “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” Nobody buries a limousine, money, or a mansion with the dead. And if you put too many jewelleries on the dead, you may not even see them again if you go back.

So, people with hearts like this are not easy to penetrate. Naturally, every dig in a stony heart is with great difficulty. You need to exert great force to penetrate and make an impact on such people. Many of them do not learn until the enemy has dealt with them. Something they would have learnt easily, they will keep arguing until the enemy roughens them up a bit before they become serious. When you are digging on a stony heart, there is so much noise you are going to be making. And this is a very serious matter.

So, I ask a question this morning: how is your heart? What is the condition of your heart? God is not interested in this physical appearance. When God begins to judge sin, He goes to the innermost content of your heart. He goes to the pinings of your heart, what many people cannot see on the surface. What is the condition of your heart, beloveth? Does God have to struggle over and over again before a small change can happen in your life? Are you the kind of person whom the Holy Spirit will ask to fast when you wake up in the morning, but you refuse? You have a stony heart. This is a very serious matter.

Brother Jimmy, a stony-hearted Christian, woke up one morning and was going to work. He got to the door and prayed, “Father, I thank you for today. As I go to work, let your hand be upon me. I cover my hand today with the blood of Jesus.” As he opened his eyes and was about to step out, the Holy Spirit said, “Son, continue the prayer”. He started praying again and was about to stop when the Holy Spirit said the same thing. It happened again the third time, and the Holy Spirit asked him to continue, but he ended the prayer and left.

He entered a taxi at the Oshodi bus stop in Lagos, but the next time he opened his eyes, he was in the kidnappers’ den in a forest at Ore in Ogun State, where they were chanting incantations and killing people. It was then that he woke up. He was praying the prayer in a hurry to go out, so he started praying it there and even speaking in tongues. Meanwhile, as he was speaking in tongues, they were doing their rituals there, but for some interesting reason, they were getting confused and mixing the wrong things. The chief priest was harassing them for making mistakes, and they were confused.

Quickly, they consulted their oracle, which told them that Brother Jimmy was the problem. So they came to him and said, “Hey! Keep quiet! Do not say anything again!” So he kept quiet, and they went back to their ritual. But he was praying on his heart, the Hannah kind of prayer with no sound, and confusion started again. They came back to him and said, “Mr. Man, the thing we said you should stop saying, you are saying it in your heart.” At that level, Brother Jimmy remembered the words of Esther that say, “If I perish, I perish.”

He then burst into loud tongues and everywhere scattered. In the midst of that confusion, an angel appeared and dragged him out of there. After that experience, Brother Jimmy was cured of his stony heart. But then, he did not have to pass through that, because experience is sometimes not the best teacher. If you are driving and you are told not to turn left, but you refuse because you want to experience what it is like, you may not even be able to gain from the experience in the event that you lose your life. This is a very serious matter.

Do you only rejoice when you are heard? Do you only rejoice when your own opinion wins the day? Do you always insist on your own preconceived ideas? Do you study the Bible in order to defend your position? When we say “The Bible says one man, one wife”, you say, “But what about Solomon? What about David?” You will just look for an example to defend yourself. Are you teachable? Does it take so many rules and emphasis for you to drop your own ideas? Are you so rigid in your mind? Are you coming to a place like this and not in any group or house fellowship?

If you are the “I am me, my mind is my mind, and I will stick to only my mind” type of person, then you are a stony-hearted person. It is a tragedy if, as of now, the heart that lies beneath your breast is a stony heart. So, you will need what the Bible calls “Circumcision of the heart”. The Bible says “And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:” because every seed requires moisture and some covering of soil before it can grow.

When it does not have enough soil, then the sun will come and destroy the young plant because there is nowhere to put the root. So, here again lies the problem with the superficial heart. It lacks earth and depth. The seed cannot even hide from germinating. Everything is on the surface. His or her emotions are on the skin. His thoughts are so shallow and not enough to provide covering for the seed. No meditation on the Word is effectively sustained in their hearts. As soon as it goes there, it bounces back.

When you tell such people “But we should not be doing this”, they reply, “Do you know what the pastors are doing?” Is that what you will tell God when you die and go before Him? When you get to the other side, every man is by himself. You will have no excuse. If you do not believe or trust the pastor, how about your Bible? Everyone will be on their own. And all the big names and titles you know are all labelled on the bottle. When the last day comes, all the labels will be removed and everybody will be equal.

There will be no big man or small man. Everyone will stand before the judgement seat of God to give an account of what they have done, whether good or bad. When the word of God falls on a heart, it jumps out again with speed. There is no space for incubation or growth. The Bible says “And immediately, it springs forth”. So when they hear that word, it springs forth, and they jump up. But then, the way they spring up is the way they come down. They are the first to jump out, but they are also the first to jump off. No depth, no personal internal effect created.

When such people hear a compelling message, they are eager to direct it to someone else, whereas salvation is an individual affair. They do not allow the word of God to penetrate deeply into them. They are ready to blame other people. They are loud and excited to show their experience, but the practical outworking of God does not show in their lives. A lot of pastors are like this. They speak louder than the depth of their hearts. This kind of heart will be jumping up and shouting hallelujah and amen, but will not understand the implications of what he is saying.

He shields his heart from obedience and jokes around with the truth. But the truth is this: there is always a serious and definite implication when the Word of God comes to your heart. It seeks to enter your heart, to engraft itself into your heart, to cut away certain things from that heart, to uproot the old nature. But the superficial and stony heart does not understand. God is not an entertainer. The Word of God is not entertainment. The Bible calls the Word of God “sword, fire, and hammer”. I do not think the word “sword” or “fire” or “hammer” has come to smile with anybody. But this is a major deception of the congregation of our days.

Preachers are now becoming more like entertainers. Check your heart. How is it? You jump up when you hear the word of God, and almost immediately you vomit it rather than receiving it. The Bible says “They have sprung up, but they have no root”. Those who know about farming know that some plants like maize, tomatoes, and spinach fall into this category. They shoot out 3-5 days after planting. Their stems are very tiny and tender, lacking strength. They bend to every wind. A little storm will uproot them. Too much rain will wash them off. If the water level rises above normal, that is the end of it.

So, most of these plants survive a one-time harvest. A maize plant, for example, is useless immediately after you pluck the fruit off it. Friends, brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen, are you shallow-hearted? Are you a maize or a tomato Christian? Are you really growing a deep root in the word of God? Do you allow sudden blessings to sweep you off your feet? Do you allow your environment to change your convictions? Immediately after some believers leave Nigeria and go overseas, the environment now conditions their lives; they check out of holiness.

This is evidence of a stony heart. Can you face every temptation and trial because of the Word of God and still keep standing? Are you rooted in God’s Word? Those things you firmly believed years ago—are you still holding on to them, or have you changed? The Bible says that the plants on stony ground endure for a while, but when affliction and persecution come, they wither away. So, the superficial heart may stand for a while, but it may soon become tired and disgusted. Wherever the Word of God truly penetrates, there must be a change, a reaction. This is a very serious matter.

Ask yourself once again: Am I in the category of a stony heart? Do I have a superficial heart? Do I pick and choose in the Word of God?

I was at the Teenage Church sometime back. One huge lesson that struck me is that many parents are the ones confusing their children. We teach them in this church: “If you are a young lady, you do not dress this way or that way. You do not wear revealing clothes. You do not expose their bodies”. But their parents, who come to church, are the ones who tell them, “Take it easy. Do not be too serious. This is the modern generation”. When we are telling them to be serious, their parents at home are telling them not to be serious.

Then, when the children start getting confused, the parents start writing letters to the G.O. and start going to Prayer City. Something that could have been avoided. You, as a parent, bought a wig for your girl, who is 12 or 13, without knowing where the wig came from. You place it on her head for one year, but you do not know that the wig is not an ordinary one. You did not know that the wig was a slow poison. Now, 10 or 20 years later, the slow poison you put on her head is manifesting, and you do not understand. You do not wear the wigs, but you give them to her.

You are a woman who comes to MFM, and you do not wear trousers, but you give them to your daughter to wear. Now that she is grown, her spirit husband is running after her, she cannot marry, and you are making noise when you were the one giving those materials to her.

And all these problems make the job of the teachers and pastors very difficult when you begin to run around for prayers. You do not use jewellery, but you buy it for your children. And when they question you, you reply, “We are old; you are the young ones and the younger generation,” and the problem starts.
